WRAP UP!

This is the very first Wrap Up session. MHSboard hopes you enjoy your time here, and look forward to your comments about the meeting that occurred on Monday August 20 2001.
  • Peter Markham stated that there happened to be some misunderstanding in the community about the selling of Hiawatha school. Markham said that the taxpayers of Hiawatha bought the school, so the bickering of selling the school for ONLY \\$10,000 is nothing considering who rightfully owns the building.
  • There will be a new addition to school property this year. A new school bus with a lift for handicap accessibility will be used for the upcoming school year of 2001-2002.
  • Among much controversy about splitting the bond proposal Dick Ketcik again stated that the issue should be split. He believes that people should have a choice. He stated that if two people were drowning would we save one, if we only had that much strength, or watch both drown. Dick did get some heat for some of his comments by a few others in attendance. Using the base that education is more important than sports they feel the proposal should NOT be split.
  • By the beginning of the new school year many classrooms will now consist of a telephone. The phones will mainly be used for easy parent/teacher conversation; yet will also be used for easy contact within the building itself.
  • The TTI Initiative is showing all its potential already. Teachers have received the luxury of calling a help line for any tough questions unanswered. Teachers, also, had the choice of ANY technological help other than a laptop. They had the choice, among many, of possibly receiving a digital camera in the occurrence of them already having a computer at home sufficient enough to enhance their ability to teach and the student’s to learn.
  • Mr. Rick Wodzinski informed the board during his report that Accelerated Math is here and ready to be used in the upcoming school year. He stated that Accelerated Math is different in many ways to that of Accelerated Reader. He pointed out also, that Accelerated Math would be just as excellent as Accelerated Reader has been.
  • Unbelievable news for football fans! Six sophomores went out for football this year! Problem? Mr. Robert Ryan assured the crowd that the handful of sophomores will be bumped up to play with the Varsity squad. Also only six girls went out for girls freshman basketball. Ryan expressed concerns here also, but has not taken any action as of yet!
  • There will be a new approach to picking our children up this year! The bus routes will NOW consist of the driver driving to the last house on his/her route and picking up the children on the trip back to the school. On the way home the driver will drop off the children the exact opposite. The first child picked up will be the last dropped off.
  • Updated fire extinguishers will be available for this year’s elementary students. This is fact due to some individuals in the community caring enough to point out such a “minor” issue.
  • There will be a thank you letter received by Mr. Peter Markham for his contribution of suggestions to the board. Board member Arlene Himes requested for this to occur.
  • Michelle Mickelson-Lavigne will be teaching High School Science for the upcoming school year of 2001-2002. She will be filling a position left open when Mr. Gary Iwinski resigned from his teaching position this summer.
  • New coaching positions for this year will consist of the following:
  1. Freshman Girls Basketball-Michelle Mickelson-Lavigne (In the occurrence of having a team)
  2. Freshman Football-Robert Ryan
  3. Freshman Assistant Football-Dave Taylor
  • Only one individual spoke at the public comment period. Peter Markham suggested to the board that each member be allowed to have and access an e-mail for easy contact with community members. Many members were leery of such a giant step into the unknown.
